Why did you start your business?
I just started sewing one day and couldn't stop, so I thought, "Hey I should try to sell my stuff!" And voila, I sell kids clothes in consignment shops and online.

How is Business:

So far so good,  I have been open for business for about a week and have just finished my first order. Starting your own business takes some time, however in the end, the benefits last forever.

I recommend:

Find something you love and do that. Only then will you find what you will be able to do at home. If I were trying to write html for someone I would probably hate it, however sewing for others is very relaxing to me and I even get paid!

Why did you start your business?
I'm a full time mother of three and a full time college student and decided that my job as a teacher had to go if I was going to be the mother that I needed to be and the student that I had to be in order to go to Grad School one day. I have a wonderful talent for creativity and that led me to sell things that I love to create from my workroom. Blankee by Heidi was born!

 How is Business:
It has been going good! The economy has things moving slow but business still remains steady.

I recommend:

Plan! Plan! Plan! I can't say that enough! And publish your own ezine! It's the very best advertising!!

Comments:

Stick with it! It will be slow at first! Be patient! It will happen an you will reap the rewards!

Why did you start your business?
I began this business after retiring from my career as a special ed. teacher to stay home with our new daughter.  When we wanted to put our new baby in cloth, we discovered that we couldn't just go to the store and find the really high-quality cloth diapers we were looking for.  Then when we turned to the internet, we were totally overwhelmed with all the choices.  So after much research, we decided to pull together all the best of the best and offer it in one store.

Voila!  Baby Belle Bottoms was born.

 How is Business:

I could not ask for the business to be going any better.  My goal for the site was slow, but steady growth.  I had this fear that the internet was so huge that I wouldn't be able to keep up.  As it is, business is just steady enough and increasing at a rate that I am very comfortable with keeping up and adding new products often.  I believe it will probably always be a work-in-progress, but that's the beauty of having my own business.   All the hours I put into it are done at home and cloth diapering is something we truly believe in, so it's a win-win situation.  It's really so much FUN!

I recommend:
Look at all your options and think about how much time you really want to devote to your business.  Working at home can be really hard if you don't budget your time just as you would if you were outside the home.  Right at first, I was staying up till all hours of the night and getting up and working again first thing in the morning.  It was draining me.  It was like since work was at home, I never left work.  I had to find a balance.  Make sure your family will support you and help you find your balance or else you'll just be MORE exhausted!

Comments:

I think THIS is a really cool website!  Anything that helps promote mothers being at home with their families gets my absolute Seal of Approval.  Thanks so much!!

Why did you start your business?

I have three children ( a 12 year old daughter and 3 year old boy/girl twins) which became my ultimate incentive to work at home. Once I made the decision to open a business, I did countless hours of research on all aspects of beginning, maintaining, and promoting a business. I found my main supplier in England and a wonderful web designer in the USA. Soon, things began to fall into place.

 How is Business:

We are now the exclusive USA supplier of a colorful line of clothing from the UK and are steadily adding new inventory.  We also have approx. 5 U.S. suppliers and a slew of affiliates providing products. Although we are now beggining to see quite a bit of traffic to our site and sales are steadily increasing, it is important to note that success will (most likely) not come overnight. It takes dedication & patience along with a real "love" for what you do.

I recommend:
I would recommend doing as much research as possible prior to starting a business. Contact other business owners, The Small Business Assistance Centers, Chamber of Commerce etc. Ask questions!!! Don't be afraid to take a chance but don't rush to decisions. Lastly, try to balance the work so you won't be overwhelmed....HAVE FUN!

Why did you start your business?
I've crafted since I was 7.  I'm a single mom to 2 girls.  I have no one to watch the girls while I work a table at craft fairs.  A friend of mine suggested selling on ebay.  I took it one step further and made a web site.

 How is Business:

The site officially opened on July 31st.  I had a 3 month computer glitch which started in August.  I'm still in start-up mode basically.  But traffic is good, and additional crafters have been added regularly to gain variety.  I'm remaining positive that things will pick up in the new year.

I recommend:

Take advantage of resources.  I have found many free business services through the internet.  Know what you are getting into.  The business end of the company is much more involved than I had anticipated.  Join other work at home mom groups, they are a great source of information and networking.

Comments:
6 months ago I was phobic about making my own site.  A friend talked me into making a personal site to get the feel of things.  Two months later my business site was up and running.  If I can do it, anyone can! :-)

Why did you start your business?
I started Maryland Secretarial Services (MSS) in April 1997. I knew that I was good at typing and really wanted to try my own business venture and I formulated a business plan for three years before opening the doors of my company.

 How is Business:
I have tripled my sales from last year.

I recommend:

Talk to people and ask their opinion.

Check out the laws and be sure there isn't too much competition.

Comments:
Thank you for starting this website.
